Be careful when riding GA400, the police have said they will stictly enforce the new speed limit!
Beginning after the a.m. rush hour on Monday, January 16, the speed limit on Georgia State Route 400 will be set at 55 m.p.h., north and southbound, between the roadway's southern terminus at Interstate 85 and its intersection with McFarland Road in Forsyth County. The change will be a reduction from the current 65 m.p.h. speed limit in effect throughout the corridor southbound and northbound above the North Springs MARTA Station. The northbound section between I-85 and North Springs MARTA is already posted at 55 m.p.h. and will remain so.
The new speed limit will be in effect until the projected September, 2007, completion of the widening of GA 400 between Holcomb Bridge and McFarland roads.
That widening project, which has necessitated shifting traffic on to the outside (right) shoulders between Holcomb Bridge and Windward Parkway, is a primary reason the speed limits are being reduced.
"For the safety of the general public, as well as our employees and those of our contractors, it is absolutely imperative that drivers slow down in this construction zone," Georgia DOT District Construction Engineer Mickey McGee said. "There will be dozens of pieces of heavy equipment and numerous personnel working in close proximity to the roadway at all times of the day. Moreover, there are several heavily-used entrance and exit ramps on GA 400 in the work area that funnel slower-moving traffic on and off the mainline. We must maintain a consistent, safe pace of traffic."
Drivers should be reminded that speeding in any construction work zone is, by law, subject to increased fines ranging from $100 to $2,000 (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-188).
The widening project should be completed by September, 2007. It will add one northbound lane between Holcomb Bridge and Haynes Bridge Road, two northbound lanes between Haynes Bridge and Windward, one northbound lane between Windward and McFarland, and one southbound lane between McFarland and Haynes Bridge. It will add one lane to the GA 400 southbound exit ramp at Holcomb Bridge and also include the installation of sound barrier walls at several locations.
