Be careful when riding GA400, the police have said they will stictly enforce the new speed limit!

Beginning after the a.m. rush hour on Monday, January 16, the speed limit on Georgia State Route 400 will be set at 55 m.p.h., north and southbound, between the roadway's southern terminus at Interstate 85 and its intersection with McFarland Road in Forsyth County. The change will be a reduction from the current 65 m.p.h. speed limit in effect throughout the corridor southbound and northbound above the North Springs MARTA Station. The northbound section between I-85 and North Springs MARTA is already posted at 55 m.p.h. and will remain so.

The new speed limit will be in effect until the projected September, 2007, completion of the widening of GA 400 between Holcomb Bridge and McFarland roads.

That widening project, which has necessitated shifting traffic on to the outside (right) shoulders between Holcomb Bridge and Windward Parkway, is a primary reason the speed limits are being reduced.

"For the safety of the general public, as well as our employees and those of our contractors, it is absolutely imperative that drivers slow down in this construction zone," Georgia DOT District Construction Engineer Mickey McGee said. "There will be dozens of pieces of heavy equipment and numerous personnel working in close proximity to the roadway at all times of the day. Moreover, there are several heavily-used entrance and exit ramps on GA 400 in the work area that funnel slower-moving traffic on and off the mainline. We must maintain a consistent, safe pace of traffic."

Drivers should be reminded that speeding in any construction work zone is, by law, subject to increased fines ranging from $100 to $2,000 (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-188).

The widening project should be completed by September, 2007. It will add one northbound lane between Holcomb Bridge and Haynes Bridge Road, two northbound lanes between Haynes Bridge and Windward, one northbound lane between Windward and McFarland, and one southbound lane between McFarland and Haynes Bridge. It will add one lane to the GA 400 southbound exit ramp at Holcomb Bridge and also include the installation of sound barrier walls at several locations.

Georgia DOT encourages the public to access the Department's NaviGAtor travel services at its website (www.georgia-navigator.com) for detailed construction, lane closure and traffic incident information; and also to use the site to establish their own 'My NaviGAtor' report for personalized, real-time traffic information. Here is the latest update for the weekend of 3/3/06:

Georgia DOT crews and contractors are widening nearly 10 miles of the congested Georgia 400 roadway. This project includes the widening of the Georgia 400 southbound exit ramp to Holcomb Bridge Road. As a reminder, the project is scheduled to be completed in September 2007. This weekend, crews will be working on GA 400 at Holcomb Bridge, and in order to complete this work safely, *the southbound Georgia State Route 400 exit ramp to Holcomb Bridge Road will be closed to widen the ramp to
two lanes.*

*The temporary closure will be in effect from 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 3, until 5:00 a.m., Monday, March 6.* (This work previously had been postponed for several weekends due to inclement weather. The work again is dependent upon favorable weather, which is expected.)

Southbound motorists wishing to exit at Holcomb Bridge will be:

- Directed to continue south on GA 400 to the Northridge Road exit;

- Return northbound on GA 400; and

- Exit at the Holcomb Bridge NB ramp.

In addition, the outside (right) lane of westbound Holcomb Bridge Road in the immediate vicinity of the exit ramp will be closed throughout the weekend so that the contractor can stage equipment. The Georgia Department of Transportation is committed to providing a safe, seamless and sustainable transportation system that supports Georgia’s economy and is sensitive to both its citizens and its environment. More info for GA400:

As you are aware, Georgia DOT crews and contractors are widening nearly 10 miles of the congested Georgia 400 roadway. This project includes the widening of the Georgia 400 southbound exit ramp to Holcomb Bridge Road as well as the replacement of asphalt along the Mansell Road exit and entrance ramps (north and southbound).

Crews will soon begin the replacement process on these exit and entrance ramps. The northbound exit and entrance ramps at Mansell will be temporarily closed beginning Friday, May 5 at 9:00 p.m. and will reopen on Monday, May 8 at 5:00 a.m. The GA 400 southbound ramps will be closed the following weekend, May 12-15 over the same time period.

The replacement of the asphalt with concrete is necessary due to general wear and tear. Concrete has improved durability and can withstand the large volume of traffic on GA 400. This portion of the project also includes improvements to the drainage system will which will positively impact motorist?s safety.

The latest update from the Georgia Department of Transportation:

Please be aware, over this coming weekend, there will be lane closures associated with the Georgia DOT Georgia State Route 400 project in Fulton County that will cause major delays.

Beginning on Friday, 11/10/06 at 9 pm until Monday, 11/13/06 at 5 am, Georgia DOT contractors will work to re-stripe new northbound lanes between Holcomb Bridge Road and Windward Parkway. This work will require lane closures, traffic shifts, periodic traffic stoppage and pacing. DOT will close both the Norcross and Roswell exit ramps of GA 400 North at Holcomb Bridge on Friday night continuing into Saturday.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid travel on GA 400 north of Interstate 285 throughout the weekend. All GA 400 traffic, both north and southbound, will be extraordinarily heavy. Multi-mile northbound back-ups are expected. (Northbound drivers desiring to exit either eastbound or westbound at Holcomb Bridge will be directed to proceed to the Mansell Road exit and return southbound to Holcomb Bridge.)

By Monday morning, it is expected that the work will be complete and the six-mile section of GA 400 NB between Holcomb and Windward will have four travel lanes open to the public. At that time, the outside (right) shoulder which has been used as a temporary travel lane during construction will be closed; it later will be reopened exclusively for emergency vehicles and GRTA and MARTA buses during designated periods of heavy traffic.

The latest update from the Georgia Department of Transportation:

Please be advised: southbound traffic on GA 400 between Windward Parkway and Holcomb Bridge Road will be reduced to one lane this weekend as Department of Transportation contractors shift travel from the outside to the inside lanes. The work will begin at 9 p.m., Friday, and continue until about 5 p.m., Saturday.

Extremely heavy traffic and long delays are anticipated southbound. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes if possible and to exercise caution if they must travel this corridor of GA 400.

The shift will allow contractors to complete the re-striping of the road and erect several overhead signs during the coming weeks. At the conclusion of that work, additional southbound lanes will be opened between Windward and Holcomb Bridge.

Well, all lanes on GA400 are now open. There is still some construction going on (sound barriers are being erected, ramp traffic lights are being worked on and signs are being erected/changed) but the traffic is flowing. Now traffic backs up right after exit 11 (Windward) instead of exit 8 (Mansell).

But for those using GA400 to get to the mountains or out of the city, things are looking better for you. Now all you have to worry about is the widening of GA141 (exit 13) and the possibility of them widening GA400 from exit 12 to exit???

Ride safe!!!
